Russell George
Waters
Feb 14, 1943 — Jun 25, 2026
Appleton
Russell passed peacefully from this life during the early morning hours of Thursday, June 25, 2026, at the age of 83. He was surrounded by his loving wife and children. Russ's final wish was fulfilled—to remain in the comfort of his own home, embraced by the family he loved so deeply.
Born at home to Thomas and Mable Waters of Langlade County Wisconsin, the seventh child of eleven and the only redhead. He grew up with a large family that remained an important part of his life, with many holidays spent in the Northwoods, especially the Fourth of July picnics with
the Waters Clan.
He proudly served his country in the United States Army from 1963 to 1965, during which time he earned his GED. While on a visit to his sister in Milwaukee, he met the love of his life, Marcie Koehler. Their chance meeting, blossomed into a lifetime spent together. They were married on May 6, 1967, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Following his military service, Russ worked a variety of jobs before beginning the career that would define much of his working life. He joined Kimberly-Clark's Atlas Mill in Appleton, where he faithfully worked until his retirement in 2000.
Russ is lovingly remembered, and survived by his devoted wife of 59 years, Marcie Waters (Koehler); his daughter, Sue (Brad) Obermeier, her son, Brandon (Sarah) (his son, Hunter); Kirby (Brittney) Waters and their children: Rowen and Gage; his daughter, Sara (Kirk), and their children: Jordan (his daughters, Evolette, Lydia, and Sayge); Taylor (Aric) (her sons, Brantley and Briggs); and Payton. He is also survived by his siblings: Ethel (Bryant, WI), Art (Appleton, WI), Terry (Kaukauna, WI), Criss (White Lake, WI), Chuck (Appleton, WI), and Norma (Ontario, Canada), along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and additional family and friends from Northern Wisconsin to Milwaukee.
Russ was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Mable Waters, and his siblings, Peggy, Mike, Tom, (White Lake, WI) and Lois (South Milwaukee, WI).
Russ was a family man and found great joy being surrounded by his family; whether it was celebrating milestones, sharing a meal, watching a game, or spending a quiet afternoon together, he treasured every moment with his family. He was a proud father, a cherished grandfather and great-grandfather, a caring brother, and a beloved uncle. He was a steady presence, later in life becoming a gentler spirit whose quiet presence was a comfort to those who were near. He leaves behind a growing legacy of children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. To all his kids, grands & greats "Yo, Are you old enough?" and "It'll cost ya 50 bucks" When he wasn't spending time with family, Russ could often be found enjoying a round of golf, watching The Price Is Right or Gunsmoke, cheering on his favorite Wisconsin sports teams, or sitting down for a game of cribbage. Whether the Packers, Brewers, or Badgers were playing, he was always ready to support the home team. His spot at Grumpy's Bar will always be viewed fondly—have an Old Style in his memory, shoot a game of pool, or gather around a cribbage board with family and friends. He'd be glad to know the laughter and friendly competition carried on. These simple pleasures became some of the memories his family and friends will
cherish most.
This last year was marked by declining health. You could often find him "watching TV, so no one would steal it," eating a pudding cup, and welcoming all his visitors with a smirk and a "How are ya? How are your folks?" And "Adios" on the way out, with one raised hand. Though his family mourns his passing, they are deeply grateful for the life he lived. His kindness and his smile have left an enduring mark on everyone who knew him. His memory is a blessing, and his legacy will live on in the family he loved so deeply. The family wishes to thank Moments Hospice especially Dana, Stacy, Aleah and Karen who were an immeasurable blessing and comfort in his last days.
"The LORD is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit." –Psalms 34:18 (NIV)
Per Russ's stated wishes, there will be no official services or memorials. However, for those who feel led to express their condolences, they may be sent to the Waters family home in Appleton.
