Town of Grand Chute

Obituary

Paul David Justin Reque

84 passed away peacefully on Saturday March 18 at Cherry Meadows Hospice.  He was born January 24, 1939, in Manistique Michigan.  He was the youngest son of the late Lauritz (Thor) and Florence (Wacker) Reque. Paul graduated from Manistique Michigan High School, class of 1958.  Following graduation, he served in the United States Military as a Navy Medic for two years. He began his law enforcement career in Santa Cruz, California in 1962 as a California Highway Patrolman and K9 handler. In 1968, he and his family relocated to Appleton where he continued serving the community as a police officer.

Paul was appointed as a Deputy Constable for the Town of Grand Chute on May 06, 1975. At that time, the town didn't technically have a police department. Law enforcement was performed by an elected constable and his deputies. Major crimes were handled by the Sheriff's Office. For several years in the mid-70's, the town board debated creating a formal police department, and that finally happened in 1978. On January 24, 1978, his birthday, the town board resolved to create the position of fulltime "police administrator," the equivalent of police chief, and they appointed Paul to the position, effective February 15, 1978.

Paul was a trailblazer here in Grand Chute, becoming the town's first police chief. During that time, he began building what would eventually become today's department. He introduced 24-hour service, which didn't exist until 1978, and created the first criminal investigator position in the department. He held the Chief of Police position until he retired on March 31, 1998.

Paul and his wife Carolyn loved spending time at car shows, showing off his 1950 custom low-rider Mercury, named Blue Heaven.  He loved to golf with whomever he could convince to go for 9 holes.  He was also extremely fond of dachshunds, and over the years had many that he loved dearly.

Paul enjoyed having morning coffee with his many friends for many years at the Wisconsin Avenue Diner.  He never wanted to miss a day and always looked forward to that first cup of coffee and talking shop.

In addition to his parents, Paul is preceded in death by his sister and brother-in-law Nadyne (Nod) and William (Bill) Reardon; brother, and sister-in-law John (Jack) and Eileen Reque.

Surviving is his best friend and soul mate, his wife, Carolyn (Reffke), his daughters Sherri (Tim) Manios FL, Trish (Matt) McCue NC, and a son Doug (Amy) Reque, WI, his stepchildren Roxanne (Russell) Butzer, Ron (Darlene) Pluger, WI and Dawn (Pete) Pierre AZ.  Paul has 9 Grandchildren: Alex, Ashley, Kyle, Bethany, Kristin and Stephanie, Rebecca, Morgan, and Dustin and six Great Grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He will be terribly missed by his wife, children and his three wiener dogs: Dream, Valentina, and Harley.  He will also be missed by his very close Friday night fish friends, George and Cheryl Latza, and Al and Barb Kozlowski.

A Memorial Service for Paul will be held at 11 AM, Thursday, March 23, 2023 at Brettschneider Trettin-Nickel Funeral Chapel with Rev. James Cowger officiating. Friends may visit the family from 10 – 11 AM. There will be Military Honors performed following the service to honor Paul's service to the U.S. Navy. He will be laid to rest at Riverside Cemetery in Appleton.

The Family would like to thank Sue, from the Wisconsin Avenue Diner, for all the coffee served black, like he always liked it, and his friend, Kirk Schneider, who was always at the diner with Paul.  Thank you to the 3 rd floor ThedaCare nursing staff of the Hospital on Meade Street for taking such great care of him.  Also, the nursing staff, and Hope, the Chaplin of Cherry Meadows Hospice, for all the care and comfort provided to him and his family during this difficult time.  Pastor James Cowger for his spiritual guidance and prayer; the Grand Chute Police Department for treating him with kindness and respect and last but not least his friend Jerry Eaton for spending one on one time with him.
