Nim Chu
Wong
Aug 1, 1934 — May 14, 2026
Appleton
Nim Chu Wong, 91, passed away in the comfort of his home with his family at his side on Thursday May 14, 2026. Nim was born in Williamsport, Pennsylvania on August 1, 1934, the fourth of six children of laundry owners Howe Soo and Quan Shee Wong. His family was part of the first Chinese immigrants to settle in the area.
Nim was a graduate of Williamsport High School and also competed in gymnastics. While growing up, Nim was detailed and a skilled self-learner, gaining proficiency in construction, as well as automobile mechanics. After high school, he enlisted in the Army and served in the Korean War as a medic. Upon completing his rotation, he was stationed at Walter Reed Hospital. During his time there, President Eisenhower happened to receive care. After being honorably discharged, he attended Tri-State College to pursue an engineering degree.
Nim met his future wife Oy in Philadelphia through his sister Lane and mutual friends. They married in 1968 and moved to Philadelphia to raise a family and take over the laundry his father-in-law Song Kai Hom had started. Children quickly followed with the birth of his first son Mark, and his second son Eric a little over a year later. Nim was able to grow the business and move the family to the suburbs of Philadelphia while also expanding to a new location in the Germantown neighborhood of Philadelphia. Nim continued to work tirelessly to ensure Oy and his sons had a good life, and the boys had every opportunity for a good education. Upon retirement he followed his son Mark to the Columbus, Ohio area to be closer to his first grandchild Ashley.
Besides working, Nim had a passion for fishing, hunting, and maintaining his cars. In his younger days, he was an avid bowler and spent time competing in tournaments. Many felt that he had the skills to be a professional bowler. He had a particular love of food and family, and there was always an occasion to enjoy a glass of scotch.
Nim was preceded in death by his parents, Howe Soo and Quan Shee Wong; his siblings, Wee Chu Wong, Hip Chu (Minnie) Wong, Fue Lun "Lonnie" Wong Hom (Philip) and Fue Lane Wong Yee (Harry).
Nim leaves a wonderful family legacy through his wife Fown Oy Wong and their two children: Mark (Jennie ) Wong, Eric (Kimberly) Wong and four grandchildren, Ashley Wong, Carley Wong, Ian Wong and Ethan Wong. The happy memories Nim made with his family and friends serve as a testament to his dedication to hard work and devotion to his family.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Nim's memory may be made to the Walter Reed Society (walterreedsociety.org/donate) or the Wounded Warrior Project (woundedwarriorproject.org)
