Maurice "Maury"
Floyd Reed
Jun 1, 1931 — Feb 9, 2024
Appleton
Maurice "Maury" Floyd Reed, age 92, of Appleton, passed away peacefully with family by his side on Friday, February 9, 2024, at ThedaCare Regional Medical Center, Appleton.
Maury was born in Manitowoc on June 1, 1931, to the late Bernard C. and Agnes G. (Hoolihan) Reed. Following graduation with the class of 1949 at Manitowoc High School, he attended U. W. Manitowoc. Maury then proudly served his country in the U. S. Army. While stationed in Europe, he taught radio school and earned the rank of Master Sergeant.
On October 29, 1955, he was united in marriage to Janice Champine in Manitowoc. The couple enjoyed 66 years together until Janice's passing in May of 2021. Maury worked at Mirro Aluminum Company in Manitowoc, then Hamilton Manufacturing in Two Rivers. He then moved to Appleton where he worked at Valley School Supplers. He owned and operated Interplan Sales LTD until 1985 and a Real Chili restaurant in downtown Appleton. On May 16, 1981, he was ordained as a Deacon and served the St. Bernard Parish for over 40 years. He was the first Diaconate Director for the Green Bay Catholic Diocese and served as both President and Treasurer of the National Association of Deacon Directors for the United States.
Maury and Janice served meals for many years at the Salvation Army. He worked diligently at serving Catholic Charities in the area. He never missed the Christmas Stars or the Passion Play productions at Xavier Fine Arts Theater. Maury was also a drummer since high school and played in the "Silk Umbrellas Boys Orchestra" and many polka bands. He enjoyed spending time at the YMCA swimming and participating in Zumba Classes. He also loved watching crime shows, golf, spending time gardening and being outdoors with Mother Nature. Above all he found great joy in making others laugh.
He will be forever missed by his nine children: Maurie (Wendy) Reed, Greg (Jean) Reed, Jim Reed, Lisa (Bill) Moede, Angie (Brian) Jansen, Mike (Vickie) Reed, Julie Love, Carey (Amy) Reed, and Jennifer Reed; 27 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren; brother, Ed (Marie Jo) Reed; sister, Elaine (Phillip) Fischer; and 2 sisters-in-law, Cheryl Ellerman and Irene Champine.
He was preceded in death by his parents Bernard and Agnes, his wife Janice, 6 siblings: Mary, Margaret, Cecilia, Bernard, Phillip, and Dorothy; father and mother-in-law and several brothers and sisters-in-law.
A Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated at 12 noon on Saturday, February 17th, at St. Bernard Catholic Church, 1617 W. Pine St. Appleton, with Most Rev. David Ricken officiating, followed by military honors. Friends may visit at the church on Saturday from 9 am until 11:45 am. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established.
