Obituary

Dr. Martin David Rudd, age 53, passed away unexpectedly on October 14th, 2023, doing what he loved most: spending time at his cabin in Conover, WI with his wife, Kris. He was born in Cornwall, England to David and Susan (Glyde) Rudd on July 31, 1970. Martin spent his childhood playing soccer, camping in pursuit of his Queen's Scout badge, and traveling around Europe.

Martin valued education and was a lifelong learner. He graduated with a degree in chemistry in 1991 and with his doctorate in inorganic chemistry in 1994, both from the University of Warwick in the United Kingdom. Martin did postdoctoral work at the University of Bergen in Norway from 1994 until 1996 and then at Baylor University from 1996-1997. He was an assistant professor of chemistry at Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, Louisiana from 1997 until 2002. Martin began his career with the UW System Colleges at UW-Marathon as an assistant professor of chemistry. Over the past 20 plus years, Martin worked in various faculty and administrative roles within the UW Colleges. His most recent appointment to his role at UW-Oshkosh as Assistant Chancellor for Access Campuses in 2018 was a great source of pride for Martin. He also served as the Editor-In-Chief for the Taylor & Francis journal "Phosphorus, Sulfur, and Silicon and the Related Elements," and was an active member of the American Chemical Society both locally and nationally. He has left a lasting impression and positive difference with his work in various communities.

In addition to his career achievements, Martin had a rewarding personal life. He married Kris on November 22, 2006, and they have thoroughly enjoyed traveling all over the United States, Africa, and Europe together. Martin's children, Josephine Rudd Zhong Manis (James) and Seth Rudd, along with his stepchildren Erika Hoff (Mike) and Blake Petersen, were a source of joy for him. He was also a proud cat dad and loved his fur babies. Martin had several hobbies, including gardening, cooking, and trying new restaurants. He enjoyed creating new dishes with the vegetables from his garden and sharing his creations with his family. Martin also took pride in posting Google reviews of local restaurants and was proud to be considered a Google Local Guide. He also loved cheering on his favorite soccer, football, and F1 racing teams.

Martin was an inspiration to us all. Martin Rudd will be remembered as the kind-hearted and loving husband, father, teacher, and role model we all remember him to be. He will be forever loved and missed deeply. He is survived by his wife Kris and four children, parents Susan and David, and his brother Phil (Clare), mother-in-law Jamie Tank; brothers-in-law Scott (Nicole) Tank and Gregg (Pagi) Tank, and many close friends and other relatives.

A memorial service for Martin will take place on Friday, October 20th, 2023, with visitation from 1-4 PM, service to follow at Brettschneider Trettin Nickel Funeral Home located at 606 N. Oneida Street, Appleton, WI. In lieu of flowers, donations to any humane society would be greatly appreciated.
