Leo Allen McCarthy

76 of Appleton, WI, passed away Thursday, January 20th, 2022, surrounded by close family who loved him deeply. Leo battled Glioblastoma for animpressive 18 months, making as many new memories with family as possible. He took advantage of every opportunity since the diagnosis; taking a road trip with his children across the east coast, finally made it to Wisconsin Dells for a ride on the Ducks and countless family dinners with his grandchildren.

Leo was born July 24, 1945, to the late Leo and Mary (Land) McCarthy in Washington DC. A few years later the family moved to Michigan where he grew up. After college he enlisted in the United States Marines and was a veteran of the VietnamWar. He later went on to graduate from Michigan State University, Lansing MI. In his retirement, he passed on his love for learning and reading by tutoring to the local elementary school students.

He is survived by his children: Richard (Rosemary) McCarthy, Keitha (Tom) Horan and Maureen (Matt) McHugh, grandchildren: Quinn, Killian, Connor and Eamon McHugh, River McCarthy and Orion Horan; his siblings: Mike (Marie) McCarthy, Patty Cross, Elaine McCarthy and Dan (Sharon) McCarthy. He is further survived by many nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian burial will take place at 2:30 PM on Friday, February 18, 2022, at St. Mary Catholic Church (312 S State St) Appleton with Rev William Swichtenberg officiating. Visitation will begin at 12:30 directly at church. Military Honors will be performed after the Mass at church and a Celebration will follow. He will be laid to rest at Riverside Cemetery in Appleton.
