Karen Ann de Young, age 76, passed away peacefully on June 19, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of dedication and service to her family and her community.
She was born on September 17, 1947, to the late Gordon and Unis (Breuer) Brown. Karen graduated from Xavier High School and then went on to attend Cardinal Stritch University as well as UW Madison and UW Fox Valley. She married the love of her life and high school sweetheart, the late Mark de Young, in Honolulu, Hawaii on August 28, 1969.
After completing her education, she embarked on a fulfilling career in education as a teacher at Saint Joseph's Middle School. Karen's drive to make a difference extended beyond the classroom. She served as the executive director of the Outagamie County Chapter of the American Red Cross for 19 years, where her leadership and compassion impacted many lives. She was a long-time member and president of the League of Women Voters of Appleton. She also served on the Appleton library board of directors. Karen received the Paul Harris award from Rotary Club for her outstanding contribution to her community.
Karen enjoyed traveling, was an avid reader, and active in her community. Karen and Mark built a life together in Appleton, where they raised their three sons. They eventually retired to Door County where they relished endless sunsets, bird watching, volunteering, and spending summer Sunday afternoons cheering on the West Jacksonport Ports county league baseball team.
Above all, Karen treasured the time spent with her family and grandchildren. She took immense pride in their accomplishments and happiness. Her presence made those moments enjoyable, leaving her children and grandchildren with many cherished memories.
Karen is survived by her children: Benjamin (Carrie), Nicholas (Lindsay), and William; her grandchildren: George, Jack, Frankie, Lydia and Sylas; her sister Kathy Brown (Mark); and many other relatives and friends. She is preceded in death by her parents and her husband Mark.
A memorial service will be held to celebrate Karen's life on Wednesday, July 17th, 3:00-6:00 pm at Riverview Gardens, 1101 S. Oneida Street, Appleton, WI 54915. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the American Red Cross in her memory.
