Judy Ann
Kienow
Oct 5, 1942 — Sep 21, 2025
Hortonville
Judy (Deering) Kienow was born October 5, 1942, to her mother Doris (Hafemann) Deering on a farmhouse porch in Angelica, Shawano County, WI while her father Herman Deering was out working the fields with a horse-drawn plow. A midwife, her grandmother Rose (Campbell) Hafemann assisted in the delivery. Born with a cleft lip, Judy needed urgent corrective facial surgery and spent the first three years of her life in the Madison hospital being raised by nurses. She would return home, requiring multiple trips to Milwaukee for additional surgeries throughout her childhood. In spite of her physical challenges, God blessed her with a positive and friendly disposition, always seeing the good in people and believing that she could be friends with almost anyone.
Judy would be the first of four Deering children. A dutiful eldest daughter, she assisted her parents tending to the needs of Joan, Bonnie and Keith Deering. A talented musician, she played accordion along with her two sisters. When she wasn't babysitting the neighbor children or helping with chores, she loved dressing up and going out dancing. While attending Mukwonago Union High School, she met the love of her life, a carpenter and cabinet maker named Harvey Kienow. After graduating she married Harvey on October 6, 1962 in Waukesha WI. In 1974 Harvey and Judy moved north to Eagle River, WI where they built their own business named Judy's Northwoods Ceramics. A skilled artist, Judy brought ceramic figures to life with her painting and made intricate macrame wall hangings. While she had no children of her own, she loved doting on her nieces and nephews, who all looked forward to receiving individually crafted gifts from her each Christmas.
After 34 years in business, Judy and Harvey sold their home and business and retired to a simple life in Eagle River. After the passing of her husband in 2016, Judy moved to Hortonville to be closer to her sister Bonnie. Judy especially loved Care Partners assisted living and quickly made many new friends with the residents and staff there. Her heavenly Father brought her story to a close and called her home from hospice on Sunday, September 21, 2025. Judy was preceded in death by an infant son, her husband, her parents, her sister Joan (Deering) Knadle and brother Keith Deering. She is survived by her sister Bonnie (Deering) Holtz and special friend Kathy Mallmann; brother-in-law Don (Joan) Knadle; many nieces, nephews, other family and friends.
A special note of thanks to Care Partners in Hortonville, they provided her wonderful care, and she loved them as family. Thanks also to Greg at St. Croix Hospice for his extraordinary compassionate care.
There will be a service for Judy on Saturday, Sept. 27, 2025, at 11 AM, at Immanuel Lutheran Ministries, W7265 School Road, Greenville, WI with Rev. Kevin Westra officiating. Visitation will begin at 10 AM with a luncheon to follow the service.
