Obituary

Our mother, Joyce J. Cummings, age 86, of Neenah, received her angel wings on Friday, January 6, 2023, and our father, Roger N. Cummings, age 89, received his wings on Thursday, January 12, 2023, at Theda Care Regional Medical Center in Neenah, surrounded by their loving family.

In March 2022, Joyce was diagnosed with lung cancer.  In January, both parents were struck with a cold virus – NOT COVID.  Mom put up a good fight against Rudy (the name she gave her cancer).  She didn't let Rudy beat her, but the virus did.  The virus also beat dad along with a broken heart.  We weren't ready for them to leave us, but God had other plans for them.

Joyce was born on January 21, 1936, the daughter of the late Edward and Hazel (Horn) Frakes – Mc Glin.  Roger was born on June 30, 1933, the son of the late Edward and Regina (Dewyer) Cummings.

After graduation, Roger hitchhiked down to Appleton to meet a friend.  They were cruising down College Avenue when the friend stopped to talk to two girls he knew.  Well, Roger was smitten with one of the girls.  According to Dad, she was the same girl he spotted years ago chasing cows in a field while he was riding on the school bus.  He was positive it was her.  They were married on May 30, 1953.  Their marriage was blessed with four children, two beautiful grandchildren and 3 precious great grandchildren.  They resided in Menasha before they retired to Crandon where they made wonderful friends.  Then, a few years ago, they moved back to the valley.

Mom loved to bake, and she was known to go through 5 lbs. of sugar in a week.  The freezer was stocked with baked goods for anyone to take home when they visited.  She loved browsing through thrift shops and shopping on Amazon.  She made many beautiful quilts that were gifted to family.

Dad was usually in his workshop.  He loved making wood crafts that Mom would paint.  He enjoyed the many hunting times with family until he couldn't anymore.  Watching TV was his favorite pastime.

They both enjoyed going to the casinos, watching Packer and Badger games, and the boys and girls high school basketball tournaments.  They enjoyed working in their yard and tending to their beautiful flowers.  And they especially loved when the whole family gathered together.  Almost every afternoon they would play a set of cribbage for money while having cocktails.  We found their tally sheet.  Don't worry, we won't tell anyone who owes over $800 to the other – it will be our secret.

Dad barely answered the phone so whenever one of the kids would call, Mom would answer with "you miss me?"  She always ended with "love you."  Her favorite saying was "you are going to miss me when I am gone."  And you were right again Mom, we already do.  We miss you both so much.

They are survived by 3 daughters:  Barb (Mark) Gaab, Deb Cummings, and Sue Cummings (Jim Potthoff); two grandchildren:  Andy Cummings and Mirrissa (Wyatt) Laxdal; 3 great grandchildren:  Kinsley Cummings, Braelyn and Brynlee Laxdal; Joyce's sisters and brother:  Pat (Larry) Schisel, Kathy (Gene) Laux, Mike (Marla) Mc Glin; sisters-in-law:  Nancy Cummings, Dona Frakes, and Susie Thoe.  They are further survived by numerous nieces and nephews, friends up north in Crandon and down in the valley.

In addition to their parents, they were preceded in death by their only son Ronald (6/11/2022), Joyce's brothers:  Richard Frakes and Dennis Mc Glin, and her stepmother Vivian Frakes and stepfather Joe Mc Glin.

Roger's sisters and brothers:  Dorothy (Gilbert) Kuntsman, Betty Cummings, Eleanor (Allen) Richter, Ray (Rose), John (Lois) and Glenn Cummings.

A funeral service will take place at 12 noon on Tuesday, January 24 th , at Bethel Lutheran Church, 829 Appleton Rd Menasha, WI  54952.  Friends may visit at the church on Tuesday from 10 am until 11:45 am.  Interment will take place at Bovine Cemetery.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff of the ICU and 5 th floor care team at ThedaCare.  Also, Pastor Cherney, Pastor Raasch, and Pastor Schmitt.  We will never forget the love and support from family and friends.  Thank you – we love you all!
