Obituary

James Joseph Hickinbotham, 89, of Menasha, WI, passed away peacefully on January 1, 2023 after a brief illness.

Born on May 13, 1933 to Arnold and Sarah Hickinbotham in Appleton, WI. After graduating from Appleton High School, Jim served 4 years with the U.S. Navy during the Korean conflict. Jim's early career started in finance, after which he began an entrepeneurial venture with Appleton Design Wall Printing, the Lower Level Lounge, and then a co-venture with his brother Tom selling excess medical equipment. He wrapped up his work life driving bus for 10 years for Valley Transit.

Jim married Marion Dingeldein on October 19, 1957, and they went on to have 4 children and 7 grandchildren. Following Marion's passing, Jim reconnected with an old classmate, Nancy Lowe, with whom he shared the final 12 years of his life.

In his younger days, Jim participated in many ski jumping events in northern Wisconsin and the UP. Once he started a family, vacations and local get-togethers took priority, with family reunions with the Hickinbothams and Dingeldeins, gatherings with the Mielkes and Medds and many other family friends, camping, cottages and campfires in Lakewood. Jim and Marion built two homes in Lakewood, at the last of which they retired. It was then that he was fondly known as "Jimmer." He was involved in many golf leagues, making an ace on number 12 at McCauslin Brook Country Club. He was also an avid member of the McCauslin Lions Club, supporting numerous causes. He and Marion also hosted a Bocce Ball league at their home, making many retired friends. The Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. in 2017 was a highlight for Jim.

Jim is survived by his 4 children: Laurie (Edward), Bruce, Jane (Paloma), David (Julia); and 6 grandchildren: John (Erin), Nicole (Jacob), Sam (Sara), Anna, Megan (David), and Drew.

Jim was preceded in death by his wife, Marion; granddaughter Abby; his parents; sisters Marian (Robert) and Jean (Tom); brothers Lyle (Phyllis), Bob (Betty), and Tom (Jane).
