Obituary

James T. Garvey June 10, 1932 - January 28, 2024

Jim was a loving father, grandfather, and husband who was dedicated to his family. After over 50 years of marriage, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife Patricia.  He was also preceded in death by his infant son Daniel and his youngest daughter Mrs. Kathleen (Garvey) Kramer.

He is survived by four loving children: Joe Garvey, Susan Garvey, Jay Garvey, and Barbara (Garvey) Jackman; and three grandchildren: Jemma Jackman, Liam Jackman, and Rebecca Kramer.

Jim was a native of Appleton and spent his lifetime as a resident of the city that he loved. He is a descendant of pioneers of both Appleton and Freedom. He was a lover of the outdoors and was an avid hunter and fisherman, enjoying both in the Upper Peninsula where he made a second home. He was a skilled and avid fly fisherman and spent many a peaceful hour casting and puffing on a cigar to keep the bugs away.

Jim graduated from Appleton High School West in 1950. He graduated from the University of Notre Dame with a degree in Civil Engineering in 1954. Jim served in the Korean War as a 2nd Lieutenant with the Army Corps of Engineers. He spent his lifelong career as president of Fox Valley Construction, carrying on a generations-long tradition of road building.  He worked tirelessly and brought the company to great success. He served on the Board of Directors of the Wisconsin Road Builders Association when it was known as the Wisconsin Transportation Builders Association. He was a charter member of Saint Bernard's parish and a patron of Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic church in Watersmeet, MI.

Those who knew him had the privilege of being regaled by his skill as a storyteller. He was a man who was interested in just about anything. He was deeply committed to all he called friend and family.
