Ellen Jane
Amick
May 21, 1951 — Aug 8, 2026
Neenah
Ellen J. Amick lived 75 full years as a devoted Catholic, a nurturing mom, a faithful spouse, a steadfast friend, a supportive godmother, a trustworthy sister, the favorite aunt, and the most beloved grandma. She embodied the role of matriarch in every sense of the word.
On August 8, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family, Ellen was welcomed into the arms of her Heavenly Father. Ellen fought cancer with extraordinary courage. She was a warrior whose strength inspired everyone who had the privilege of knowing her.
Ellen married Dennis Bayer in 1972, and together they had three children. Their family life began on Drew Street in Appleton, just around the corner from where Ellen grew up in the "castle house" across from City Park. Ellen's home was always a gathering place. There were outdoor card games, neighborhood parties, and family reunions, many of which involved a pig roast. Her door was always open, and there was always room for one more around her table.
In 2000, Ken Amick came into Ellen's life and brought with him a gentleness and companionship that she deeply cherished for 20 years. Ken loved to golf, and Ellen was perfectly happy riding beside him in the cart, occasionally swinging a club herself. She loved traveling with Ken to the Cayman Islands as well as to France, Germany, and Russia, playing games around the kitchen table, and sharing dinners with close friends. Later, Ellen became a devoted caregiver to the man who had brought such gentleness and joy to her life.
For the last few years, Ellen enjoyed the companionship of Terry McLaughlin. Together they wintered in Florida, where she enjoyed golf cart rides, visits to the pool, and simply sitting in the warm Florida sun.
Of all the roles Ellen held throughout her life, being a mom and grandma was all she ever wanted. She showed up on the sidelines to every game, competition, and performance. She never wanted to miss anything.
Ellen was a true believer in Jesus Christ, a faithful Catholic and a champion of Catholic education. A 1969 graduate of Xavier High School, she remained connected with her high school friends throughout her life and especially enjoyed their weekly trivia nights. In 1992, Ellen returned to Xavier as the school secretary. There, she formed lifelong friendships with teachers, staff, and countless students who loved her dearly. After retirement, Ellen partnered with former principal Mr. Reynebeau and jumped headfirst into the cookie business for more than a dozen years.
Ellen always made time for her dear friends, often with a deck of cards between them. She was a fast dealer, smooth shuffler, and quick counter. She was just as happy playing Rummikub, generously teaching others her "secret moves." Wherever Ellen was, there was usually music, too. An ordinary evening could easily turn into a living-room dance party or a night of singing karaoke.
Her parties were incredibly memorable, and she had an eye for making things beautiful. She was a talented floral arranger, table decorator, and an expert host. Her tables were set with gorgeous centerpieces, glowing candles, and her elegant tableware. She had an ability to create an ambiance that kept everyone gathered around the table well beyond the meal.
What people will remember most about Ellen was the way she made them feel. She had a magnetic personality and genuine warmth that will remain with all of us forever.
Ellen is survived by her children, John (Anya) Bayer, Michelle (Peter) Forsythe, Laura (Geoff) Possley, Sean (Phillip Braun) Amick, and Kyrstie Amick; her nine cherished grandchildren, Hannah, Allison, Tyler, Makenna, Carter, Madeline, Rowen, Brielle, and Florian. She is further survived by her siblings, Bruce White of Milwaukee, Peter (Carolyn) White of Winneconne, Trude Jacobs of Appleton and The Villages, FL, and Sara (John) Schnell of Summerfield, FL,
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Ken Amick; her mother, Carol (Femal) Peterson; her father, Richard White; and her stepfather, C. W. (Pete) Peterson.
The funeral service will be on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, at St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception in Greenville, officiated by Fr. Mark Mleziva. Visitation is from 9 a.m. to noon. Funeral Mass at noon. A lunch reception will follow.
