Elizabeth "Liz"
M. Courtney
Nov 15, 1923 — Jul 8, 2021
Elizabeth "Liz" M. Courtney, age 97, of Appleton, passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 8th, 2021, at Brewster Village with her family by her side. Liz was born in Kimberly on November 15, 1923, to the late Henry and Catherine (Verhoven) DeLeeuw. She grew up on the family farm where she learned the value of hard work – a trait she carried well into her 90's. On June 23rd, 1956, she was united in marriage to Kenneth E. Courtney at St. Mary Catholic Church in Appleton, where she was a parishioner for many years. The couple enjoyed 44 years together until Ken's passing in August of 2000. Together, they were the family's third generation that owned and operated Courtney Woolen Mill. Liz also worked for many years at Zwicker Knitting Mill alongside her best friend Hazel. She enjoyed spending many summers at the family cottage on Deer Spring Lake. Liz had a real passion for keeping her yard looking nice and her house spotless. She loved gardening, cooking, and made thousands of quilts for people over the years. Most of all, Liz loved spending time with her children and grandchildren
Survivors include two sons: Thomas (Kathy) Courtney, Appleton and Mark (Barb) Courtney, Wilmington, NC. 4 grandchildren: Rebecca (Christopher) Loofboro, Appleton, Andrew (Kimberly) Courtney, Lake Mills, Alyson Courtney, Oceanside, CA, and Travis (partner Lark Starkey) Courtney, LaJolla, CA; and sister, Marlene VanAbel, Kaukauna. She is further survived by many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, 3 brothers: Joseph, Harold, and Clarence DeLeeuw; and 5 sisters: Madge Perry, Dorothy Oppelt, Ann Ketels, Theresa Hackstock, and Rosie Kraus.
A Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated at 11 am on Tuesday, July 13th at St. Mary Catholic Church, 312 S. State St. Appleton, with Father Bill Swichtenberg officiating and Deacon Jeff Prickette concelebrating. Friends may visit at the church on Tuesday from 9 am until 10:45 am. Interment will take place at St. Mary Catholic Cemetery, Appleton. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Brewster Village for their love and support and the extraordinary and compassionate care given to Liz during the past 4 years.
