Obituary

Carl H. Thiel, age 91, Appleton, WI, passed away peacefully with his family at his side on October 8, 2021. He was born March 15, 1930, in Leopolis, WI, to Arthur and Anna (Klement) Thiel. A graduate of Marion High School in 1947, Carl served in the Army and is a veteran of the Korean war.

Carl met his wife Jean (Aschenbrenner) during their high school years in Marion, WI. They married August 22, 1953, at St. Mary's Church in Leopolis. Carl and Jean enjoyed ballroom and Olde Tyme dancing since they first dated as teenagers. They danced together for over 70 years enjoying so many friends and creating lifelong friendships at the various dance halls.

In 1953 Carl joined the Appleton Police Department. After 32 years of public service, he retired in May 1985 as Police Inspector. In 1978 he was honored to be selected to attend the FBI National Academy in Quantico, VA, for additional law enforcement training and education. In his retirement, Carl continued serving and working in various capacities for the Police Department on a part-time basis. During his 47 years of service to the City of Appleton, he had the privilege to serve under six police chiefs.

Carl loved to golf. He was a member of Appleton's Reid Golf Course for 45 years. He shared the love of golf with a core group of seven friends; you could find them playing courses around Northeast Wisconsin on a regular basis. The friendship of this group and their wives lasted for decades.

After his retirement, Carl drove funeral coaches for the Seidl Livery Services for 24 years, retiring in 2008. He enjoyed playing piano. There were many nights he played at his parent's tavern in Pella and at parties. The piano gave him joy and relaxation. Another huge enjoyment was being part of the Old Glory Honor Flight in 2013.

Carl served St. Joseph's Catholic Church as an Usher and Hospitality Greeter for over 60 years. He was a lifetime member of the VFW Post #2778 of Appleton.
