Obituary

"Al" to his friends, was born in the Bronx borough of New York City in 1931, to Maxwell and Sylvia Kresch. He lived a life dedicated to science, literature, art, and his family.

His youth saw him graduate from the Bronx High School of Science in 1948 and Cornell University in 1952. He served his country in the Army (stationed in Germany), and then obtained a Ph.D. in chemistry with a minor in physics from Rutgers University in 1961.

His professional career started as a researcher for National Cash Register Corporation in 1960, but he made Appleton his home in 1972 when he and his colleagues were transferred to Appleton Papers. He spent the remainder of his research career there, retiring in 1992.

Shortly after moving to Appleton Al met his wife of 46 years, Hilla. In 1977 they were blessed with their son Max.

Al could entertain on diverse subjects ranging from chemistry and physics to Greek mythology to classical music. As he used to say, there is Carmen, and then there are all the other operas. His family and friends fondly remember his ability to recite poems apropos of any situation -- short or lengthy, serious or silly (or even indecent).

He remained active throughout his life, alternately jogging, cross country skiing, or golfing, and in his later years playing frisbee golf -- occasionally even in the snow. He was a daily regular at the Appleton YMCA.

Al is survived by his wife Hilla, his son Max, daughter-in-law Agnes, granddaughterSylvia, brother Robert, and sister-in-law Sheila.

His family remembers him for his love, honesty, wisdom, intelligence, humor, and his dedication as husband, father, and grandfather.

A funeral service for Al, officiated by Rabbi Michoel Feinstein of Chabad of the Bay Area, was held December 6th at the Moses Montefiore Cemetery in Appleton.
